Happy Sunday Families!
Wow! What a beautiful weather weekend! I hope you've found a way to get outside and enjoy yourselves :) With just over 20 school days left this year, time seems to be flying in Room 112! The students are beginning to think of themselves as 'almost third graders' and the nearness and excitement of summer vacation is palpable. With that being said, we've still got some learning and fun activities left to accomplish. This past week in 2nd.... Math: In Math this week, students continued their work with measurement, shifting the focus to comparing lengths. Students practiced identifying lengths and using subtraction and a strategy called a 'bar model' to solve for the difference in the two lengths. I was impressed with how quickly they grasped the concept! We will spend just about 1-2 more weeks on Measurement before closing out the year with several lessons on Geometry and Arrays. Reading: We concluded our Series Book Club unit and have moved on to introducing Poetry. Poetry is our next Writing unit but it felt only logical to practice reading poetry before attempting to write our own! Students practiced hearing the rhythm of a poem and looking to understand what the author might have meant by his words. Looking ahead.... -Warmer Temps: With warmer temperatures upon us, please ensure your child is traveling to school each day with a water bottle! Additionally, our room is not conveniently located near a bubbler, so it may be helpful to send in two, if you're able! Thanks for your help with this. -1/2 Day Professional Development Day for teachers this Wednesday May 19. -Monday, May 31-Memorial Day NO SCHOOL Enjoy the rest of your weekends! Hello Families,
I hope you're all enjoying your weekend! Spring is officially upon us! This is my favorite time of year as a teacher. As a class, we've locked into our groove and know each other and our routines so well. I'm enjoying every minute :) Additionally, we welcomed a new friend, Julianne, from the 2nd Grade Remote Class. We're so happy to have her! This past week in 2nd....
Reminders! Chromebooks: Please remind your child to plug their computer in each night to charge to ensure full usage during the school day! May 19: Staff Professional Development--1/2 Day for Students May 31: Memorial Day NO SCHOOL Hello Families,
I hope you enjoyed your weekends! It was so wonderful to get a taste of spring at the end of last week :) While chillier these past two days, I hope you and your families were able to do something outside together! Over the past week....
Looking Ahead.... New Specials! This week we will begin our last Specials rotation and start Art and Music! The kiddos are so excited! Please see the below message from Mrs. Leavitt, the student's art teacher: Hello Second Grade Families! I am happy to be teaching art here at Memorial School and starting classes with your second grader this week! I have taught art in Framingham and Hopkinton and have spent time as a paraprofessional and long term sub in Medway. I have always loved working with children and find it very rewarding to share my love of art with students. ThIs term the second graders will be creating art surrounding the elements of art, which include, line, color, texture, shape & form. I look forward to offering them opportunities to explore and generate new ideas through exposure to art and different media. If you have any concerns or questions, the best way to reach me is through email: [email protected] You can also follow me on twitter @LaurieLeavitt3 Best regards, Laurie Leavitt Upcoming Book Fair: The start of the Spring Book Fair begins tomorrow! Please see the attached parent flyer to navigate to Burke-Memorial's access code. We are approaching the spring season where there may be 60 degree temps one day, and 30's the next. Students should still be coming to school with jackets and appropriate clothing to match the weather. We go outside most days around 9:30 AM so it can still be very chilly at that time. Thanks for your help with this! Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns and as always, feel free to share any fun happenings at home! Hello Families,
I hope you are staying safe and warm during today's snow! We are inching closer and closer to the 100th day of school and it truly feels like the time has flown! I am so proud of the growth these students have shown since Day 1 and look forward to all the learning that's left to happen :) This past week in 2nd.....
Looking ahead... -Valentine's Day: We will celebrate Valentine's Day as a class on Friday, February 12th! In order to safely celebrate, Memorial School's protocol requires Valentines to be brought in by Wednesday 2/10 to give time for a 48 quarantine period. If they arrive even a day later, I will unfortunately not be allowed to distribute them. Please remember that our school's policy also notes that we cannot have food as part of the valentine. I've reattached our class list to ensure every child is included! Thanks for your help in continuing this elementary school tradition :) -Website: I've updated our website with some new pictures of the students playing in the snow :) There's no better joy than a child playing in fresh snow! Check them out! https://msstockersclass.weebly.com/ Please reach out if you have any questions or wish to share fun that's happening at home! Hello Families,
I hope you and your families had a great first week back following winter vacation. We worked hard as a class to remember our classroom expectations and routines. Some highlights from this past week are detailed below!
-Homework Log: Thank you families for your support with our first week of using a Homework Log! For the most part, students were extremely responsible with completing and returning them; woohoo! As a reminder, please ensure your students are completing 20 minutes of reading each night and the assigned math program as well. Thanks for your help with this :) -Heritage: Each year, second graders complete a Heritage Unit where they pick a country of origin from their family history and research it. This usually culminates in a Heritage Day celebration at the beginning of April. Due to COVID restrictions, that celebration won't look as it has in years past; however, we're working hard as a second grade team to ensure the unit contains many fun and engaging aspects. Your students will bring home the attached document tomorrow. As an initial step in this work, please talk with your child and determine which country they will be studying over the next few months. I ask that you do your best to have these returned by Thursday, January 14th. -Donors Choose Yoga Mats: As you may remember, earlier this school year I submitted a project proposal for Yoga Mats for our classroom using the website Donors Choose. As a follow-up to the project being funded and completed, I must submit project pictures of the materials being used as well as the project's impact within our classroom! I have attached the website-provided permission slip below for you to look over with regard to me taking pictures of your children. It's highly likely the photos won't be used by the website, but I wanted to ensure privacy measures were taken. After reading it through, if you would not like me to take their picture, please respond to me directly. Thank you! Thanks for your continued partnership this year! I hope you all stayed safe and warm yesterday with our first winter storm! It was so great meeting with many of you last week at Family Conferences; thank you again for your patience with me as technology acted up! For those of you with conferences scheduled for this Tuesday and Wednesday, I will send out a link the morning of!
This past week in 2nd....
-Report Cards: Term 1 Closes this Friday, December 11. Report Cards will go home on Tuesday, December 22nd. -Full Day Wednesdays: Full Day Wednesdays will begin Wednesday, December 16th. Please reach out if your child's transportation schedule will be shifting at all! -Winter Weather: Please continue to send your child in with the appropriate winter clothing depending on the day! With the cold winter wind during our morning snack time, sometimes a hat, gloves, and scarf really are necessary! Hello Families,
I hope you had a wonderful weekend! Whether you took to the streets and participated in trick or treating or had a small costume get-together indoors, I hope your children enjoyed their candy, costumes, and time together. Send along pictures if you have them :) This week in Room 112...
Looking ahead.... Scholastic Book Orders are due tomorrow, November 2. If you plan on making an order, please do your best to place it by 3pm tomorrow afternoon. I've included the link again for your convenience :) Class Page https://orders.scholastic.com/W64V4 Book Flyer: https://editions.mydigitalpublication.com/publication/?i=670604 November Sharing Activity: As we move into November, the themes of family, community, and gratitude immediately come to mind. We will be weaving these themes into our work together in the classroom. Please send your child in with a picture of their family by Friday, November 6. We will be sharing about our families throughout our Morning Meetings in November. Thanks for your help :) Breakfast: I've received inquiry from a few families regarding the new Breakfast option at school. Breakfast is available in the main lobby each morning for students who may not have eaten that morning. We discussed as a class that if you've already eaten that morning, it would be kind to save that breakfast for a friend who hasn't, even if the cinnamon roll sticks look yummy! The kiddos grasped that idea beautifully! That being said, if your child hasn't eaten, they are absolutely welcome to eat while they complete their morning routines. Please reach out if you still have remaining questions. Good Evening Families!
I hope you all enjoyed the sunny fall weekend! I headed home to CT to see my parents and was able to spend plenty of time outside :) I'm looking forward to hearing about how the students spent their weekends! This past week in 2nd.....
